Microsoft made a genius move. First, they made a shitty operating system, Windows Vista. Second they have now hyped their new operating system, Windows 7. I recently downloaded Windows 7, and from what I can tell, Windows 7 is just Windows Vista with a few modifications. Now don’t get me wrong, Windows 7 is a lot better than Vista, and those modifications are well designed. 7 seems faster than Vista, and if you are making the switch from Vista to 7, you won’t have any problems at all. However, if you waited, and stuck with XP, you will still have the same problems that you would have from switching to Vista.

however the real genius is that microsoft created a “decent” operating system that compared to vista, is magnificent. so public hype is already very positive. all those people that didn’t want to get vista will get windows 7. but for those of us that did get windows vista, we are getting charged full price for an upgrade. because thats all that 7 is, an upgrade. the shell is the same, the look is the same. all they did was make it a little more efficient and throw in a few snazzy features. and if you bought vista, you’ll get suckered into paying 140 dollars, or whatever it is, for an upgrade. The beauty of it all is that everyone that has vista will do it too. why? because vista sucks.

There are a lot of methods that have to do with predicting the future, but what about simply reacting to past and current stock performances? Throughout the course of time, there are bubbles in stock prices. These could be the result of an entire market bubble, or excess investor confidence about a particular stock. The cause is not important. What is important is that these bubbles exist. I think that when these bubbles occur, shortly after they form, the stock price decreases.

Bubbles sometimes are a long time in forming, and other times they are formed quickly and burst just as quickly. What I am interested in are these short term bubbles that burst quickly. I theorize that there is some threshold and when a stock has a daily increase greater than that threshold, then a certain percent of the time, it will decrease in value the next day. By adjusting that threshold you can achieve a statistical probability of stocks decreasing the following day greater than 50% percent, which almost guarantees profitability.

If someone could find these bubbles and then short those stocks, they could make a lot of money. The key to this method is to find the thresholds. This can be done by analyzing the historical prices of stocks and finding patterns.

The iPhone was a revolutionary device that combined functionality with small size. I think the iPhone has the potential to usher in a new type of ultraportable computer. As it is right now, I think that the screen size of the iPhone limits its potential. However, if Apple were to add a second screen a la the Nintendo DS I think that device would have great potential. I think that a device that is essentially two iPod touches combined to make one device would do the trick.

Screen: The device would have two touch screens, however, the bottom touch screen would be used quite a bit more. The bottom screen would have a keyboard that could be minimized, as well as a dedicated scroll area. This scroll area would be able to control the top screen through the use of various multi-touch gestures. A pinch would zoom in, and a swipe up, down, left or right would cause the top screen to pan in that direction. Placement and size of the keyboard and mutli-touch area would be customizable. Keyboard input would be accomplished by the thumbs, with the keyboard always in landscape mode. The device would probably do away with the accelerometer, as rotating the device to a portrait orientation would not make sense, at least not to me. (An application could possibly make use of it, for instance an application for ebooks)

Processor: I know that Intel had said at one point that the iPhone should have been running its Atom processors, which means that they would fit into the casing most likely. An Intel atom processor could give this device the same power as the Macbook Air, just in a much smaller enclosure.

Size: Basically two iPod touches, one on top of the other, screens facing each other. The increased area would allow for larger memory, which in turn would allow for faster speeds, and greater functionality. This would allow the computer to create and edit documents and do many of the same things that a computer can do

OS: The computer would probably retain a similar operating system to the iPhone, because that type of OS is better suited to a small device than a full OS like Windows Mobile.

So the rest of the computer has been changing and improving, but the keyboard has remained relatively the same. This leads me to believe that at some point in the near future we are going to see an evolution of the keyboard. Based on my belief that touch screens are the future of computing, I think that the keyboard will manifest itself similar to the iPhone’s keyboard, only on a larger scale and with a few minor adjustments.

I don’t think that just enlarging the iPhone keyboard and placing it on a touch screen laptop would be a good idea for two main reasons. The first reason is that the iPhone keyboard is designed to be used by two fingers, and it doesn’t scale to five fingers very well. The second reason is related to the first reason, and is a lack of tactile response. On keyboards now you have to press the key down in order to actually make a letter show up on the screen. This allows you to rest all ten fingers on the keyboard without actually typing anything, and I think that this is an important feature to keep in at least some form.

The Blackberry storm played around with the idea of a clickable touch screen. This has debuted to mixed reviews, because the clickable touch screen actually takes longer to type. Users have to wait for the scren to “unclick” in order to type another key.

In order to solve the dilemma of tactile response, I advocate a touch screen keyboard that requires an extra movement to actually cause a letter to appear on the screen. I think that once you put your finger on a key, you will then have to “flick” that letter to the edge of the screen. This could be either top, bottom, or side of the screen. This would retain the ability to keep all ten fingers on the keyboard without actually striking a key. I also think that this movement would be fairly easy to learn and to implement.

What evolutionary purpose to wisdom teeth serve, if they just cause tumors or other complications. I mean, if the dentists are just going to remove my wisdom teeth, why did humans evolve with them anyways?

Maybe they evolved wisdom teeth because back in the day, people had bigger jaws and so their wisdom teeth didn’t cause complications. But then somewhere along the line humans started thinking that people with small jaws were more attractive. And because back in the day the more attractive ones were probably the ones more likely to survive, due to their superior physique, the small jawed gene won out. And that puts humanity where it is today, with wisdom teeth that just cause problems like tumors and cysts.

Moral of the story, I’m marrying someone with a big jaw. That way my kids won’t have to suffer through getting their wisdom teeth out.

The newest bond has been met with some not so good reviews. One of the criticisms is that this is the first time that there was a sequel, and that you needed to watch casino royale to fully appreciate the plot in Quantum of Solace. There is also the lack of development coupled with a focus on action. This leads to a good action movie, but lacks some of the luster of previous bond movies. However I think that the last bond movies have been missing something critical. In all the other bond movies we always got to see Q unveiling some new gadget, and those gadgets always played a part in the movies. In Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, no Q and no gadgets. In the future, bond needs to get back to its roots. A 2 hour action packed thriller with a decent plot that is self contained in one movie, and more importantly, lots of super cool gadgets.

When it’s sunny the planes can power their control consoles, with the solar energy, when it’s not they can still use fuel. My bet is that solar panels would pay for themselves. (Only problem is the friction that might make this an impossible idea, however a clear overlay capable of resisting high temperatures on top of the solar panels might address that issue)

- There need to be more airplane makers. Each country seems to have its own airplane producer, which essentially results in a lack of competition. If there were more airplane manufacturers it would result in greater innovation and lower prices, which would also help the airlines.

- It would make a lot more sense to board the people seated in the back first, and proceed sequentially by row. I don’t understand why first class people want to spend more time on the plane. Shouldn’t they want to spend as little time as possible? I mean I have never flown first class but I would imagine it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, and I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t want to sit on the plane any longer than I have to

My opinion on intelligence.

I’ve been thinking recently about what intelligence really is, and I’ve come up with my own definition. My definition is probably influenced by previous knowledge and what I have read or encountered during my life, but as far as I know the definition is uniquely mine.

First off, knowledge is different from intelligence. Knowledge is information. Intelligence is what you do with the information. Smart is probably best used as a synonym for intelligent, but I think in general people also use it to describe someone who possesses a lot of knowledge, which does not necessarily make them intelligent.

Intelligence is one’s ability to retain, apply, synthesize, and integrate knowledge, and the speed at which they can do so.

The ability to retain of knowledge is important, because that retention is what allows the use of knowledge. Retention is comprised of two things, storage and recall. Storage is important, and the ability to store knowledge is important, but useless without the ability to recall said knowledge. The length of retention is a factor, but a person with a short memory may still be quite intelligent. Retention of knowledge is more related to the ability to keep a piece of knowledge in your mind while you are applying, synthesizing from, or integrating it. You can’t apply something if you don’t know it. Retention also speeds up the process of thinking, because you don’t need to spend time looking for the information. Notice that the amount of knowledge is not a factor, because the amount of knowledge that one possesses is merely a function of how much they have been exposed to. Someone may have memorized the entire phone book, but that does not make them intelligent. Some argue that retention is outdated, because in the current age of the internet, information is readily available. I would argue that retention is still relevant because the internet is much less efficient if you don’t know what you are looking for, and recall from the brain is always going to be faster than going to computer and googling something.

Application of knowledge is the ability to take a piece of knowledge and then know what to do with it and how to use it. Knowledge is related to other pieces of knowledge, and the ability to recognize those connections and use that knowledge is important when measuring in intelligence. If you don’t have a clue where that piece of knowledge might be potentially useful, you can’t use it. Using your knowledge is what application of knowledge is all about. Application of knowledge is part of the process that people refer to as thinking. The other two parts of thinking are the synthesis and integration of knowledge.

The synthesis of knowledge refers to someone’s ability to create knowledge or ideas from other knowledge. An example of this concept is when you lose your shoe, you formulate the idea that you someone may have stolen it. You have no clue where your shoe is, but given the fact that it is missing, you come up with a hypothesis that can be tested. Once new information has been synthesized, it can then be integrated and applied. The ability to take a piece of knowledge and extrapolate it to other things is part of how people learn, and is also part of thinking.

Integration of knowledge is taking two separate pieces of knowledge, and connecting them. Integration is not about using the knowledge, but rather figuring out how it relates to other things. Integration of knowledge is what allows for the application of knowledge. In the grand scheme of things, integration of knowledge is what forms the basis of our opinions and preconceptions, because we associated one piece of knowledge with others. The ability to integrate knowledge is the last component of thought.

Given two people that have identical abilities to retain, apply, synthesize, and integrate knowledge, the person who has can do those things faster is the more intelligent. It is important to note that is not the person who does them faster in real life, but rather the person who has the capability to do them faster. This makes relative intelligence hard to gauge, and the speed at which they do so impossible to gauge. We can get an estimate of the speed at which someone retain, apply, synthesize, and integrate knowledge, but it is just an estimate, and is not entirely accurate. Indeed I can’t think of a way to accurately measure intelligence. Intelligence tests (IQ tests) are a good estimate, but they are not entirely accurate, and may not fully capture someone’s intelligence.
